Lewis Benson papers

Abstract

The Lewis Benson Papers document the life and service of Lewis V. Benson (1906-1986), a Quaker and recorded minister of New York Yearly Meeting. His in-depth reading and study of the writings of 17th century Quakers gave him the venue to bring their message to a modern audience. He did this predominantly through his own writings and lectures.

Sandra Lee Cronk was a Quaker author who co-founded School of the Spirit, a ministry of prayer and learning under the auspices of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Her papers include manuscripts of her published works, numerous unpublished manuscripts, and records of some of the workshops that she gave at Pendle Hill.

Abstract Charles Thomas Hancock, II, was a Quaker historian and activist. He served as a CO in World War II and was a member of Scarsdale Monthly Meeting and later Mount Toby Monthly Meeting. He served as editor of a newsletter, the New York Young Friends Correspondent from 1949-1951. The small collection contains largely business correspondence concerning the Correspondent, with some older Quaker material for reference. He served as Curator of the Salem Quarterly Meeting records and was Librarian of the Friends Society, Salem, Ohio. Abstract

This collection includes letters and papers of the Roberts and French families. Included is a record of the disownment of Asa Roberts from the Orthodox meeting in 1828, presumably due to his Hicksite beliefs,and a letter from John Mott to Josiah Mott, regarding Quaker testimony and issues of the Hicksite separation. Also included are wills and deeds of Robert French and other members of the family, as well as maps and charts of their properties in Burlington County, NJ.

Samuel Walton Family Papers

Abstract The Waltons were prominent Quakers in Philadelphia, Pa., and Belmont County, Ohio. Joseph Walton (1817-1898) taught at Westtown School, edited the Quaker periodical, The Friend, and served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox). His brother, Samuel Walton (1827-1899), moved to Ohio in 1847 and in 1854 married Sarah James Edgerton at Stillwater Monthly Meeting, the center of Wilburite Quakerism in Ohio.
