Biographical / Historical

William Heartt Reese was born in New York, the son of Arthur and Harriet (Smith) Reese. He graduated from Amherst College and earned a master's degree in music from Columbia University, a doctorate in music from the University of Berlin, and a degree in conducting from Musik Hochshule.

Dr. Reese was a professor of music at Haverford College for 28 years, between 1947 and 1976. While living in Haverford, he founded and conducted the Philadelphia Chamber Chorus and also conducted the Bethlehem Bach Choir in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and was also a conductor for Haverford College's Glee Club Orchestra.

Reese married Dora (Fischer) Reese in 1965. He died on March 22, 2006, in West Hartford, Connecticut. The William Heartt Reese Music Fund at Haverford College was established in 1977 in his honor.
