Scope and Contents
This collection is composed of a single, original, handwritten copy of Peter Andrews’s journal kept during his travels in England during the years 1755 and 1756. Entries describe his voyage from Philadelphia to Newcastle, including the weather, fellow passengers, and Quaker meetings held onboard. Upon Andrews’s arrival in England, entries describe visits to fellow Quakers, Quaker meetings, and discussions of the state of the Society of Friends in England.

Biographical Note
Peter Andrews (1707-1756), was born November 20, 1707, in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, to Edward and Sarah Andrews. In 1728, he married Esther, daughter of Samuel and Silence Butcher. The couple had one daughter, Temperance Andrews, who died while Andrews was in England. In 1742, he was recommended for the ministry and was a minister for the last 14 years of his life. Andrews was close friends with John Woolman, also a minister, and accompanied him on his first preaching tour to New England in 1747. During his travels in England, Andrews became ill and died at the house of John Oxley in Norwich, England, on July 13, 1756, at the age of 49.
