Marion Parris scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Marion Parris Smith scrapbook houses the large one volume scrapbook of Marion Parris, who took both her A.B. and Ph.D. degrees from Bryn Mawr College, later becoming a Professor of Economics at the same institution. The scrapbook spans from 1897 to 1906 and gives an excellent overview of the undergraduate and post-graduate life of a Bryn Mawr student.
The scrapbook comprises one large volume. The first half consists of many programs, class supper memorabilia, and exams in various subjects. There are a great many drawn name cards and various clippings and memorabilia regarding Bryn Mawr. The second half mainly concerns Marion’s alumnae activity, as well as some Bryn Mawr graduate student material. There are many letters to the Alumnae and much of M. Carey Thomas’ correspondence with committees of the Alumnae Association. The material is largely regarding raising money and endowments for Bryn Mawr, and the Finance Committee that for which Parris served as chairman.
Though there is no one particularly notable feature of Parris’ scrapbook, it provides a comprehensive and interesting record of the life of the college during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It would be a valuable resource for those interested in Bryn Mawr during this time period.

Biographical / Historical
Marion Parris took her B.A. from Bryn Mawr in 1901 in History and Political Science. She worked as a private tutor (1901-02), and the warden of Summit Grove (1902-04) and Rockefeller Hall (1904-05). In 1905, she became a fellow in economics. She held the Bryn Mawr College Research Fellowship and was a student at the University of Vienna from 1906-07. Parris was a Professor of Economics at Bryn Mawr from 1907-1934. She also served on the Finance Committee at the College.
She passed away in 1935.
