Sylvia Scudder (Bowditch) scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Sylvia Scudder Bowditch scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Sylvia Scudder (later Bowditch), who entered Bryn Mawr with the class of 1899, but graduated in 1901. The scrapbook contains materials from 1895 to 1906 and primarily contains photographs and other Bryn Mawr memorabilia.
The scrapbook constitutes one large volume. It gives a good example of the types of memorabilia typically kept in scrapbooks. There are a variety of letters, newspaper clippings, BMC correspondence, and small cards and notes from friends. There are a few photographs of basketball and tennis teams, as well as professional photos of plays. Also contains are various examples of student-life-related material, related to self-government, literary publications and social events. Of particular note in the scrapbook are photographs of the campus buildings (from a catalog or publicity publication); pictures of the ’96 and ’99 basketball teams; and programs from the graduations of 1896, 1899, and 1901; and copies of exams for Christian Ethics, Required Philosophy, Modern History, and Psychology.
This scrapbook contains a representative assortment of the memorabilia typically found in Bryn Mawr scrapbooks. It would be of value to anyone interested in student life, Bryn Mawr, athletics, etc. from the turn of the century.

Biographical / Historical
Sylvia Scudder (later Bowditch) was born in 1875. She was prepared by the Cambridge School for Girls in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She matriculated with the Bryn Mawr class of 1899, but received her degrees—in Greek and French—in 1901. From 1901-1902, she did graduate work in Greek at Radcliffe College. She taught Greek and English as the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland from 1902-1904. She married Ingersoll Bowditch in 1904. For 21 years, she was the treasurer of the Bryn Mawr Club of Boston, as well as being the collector and editor for her class. She passed away in 1964.
