Scope and Contents
The Genevieve Thompson Smith scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Genevieve Thompson, Bryn Mawr class of 1907. The scrapbook contains materials from 1903-1907. It consists of a large number of photographs and other memorabilia.
The scrapbook consists of one volume. The first section of the book is photographs of a variety of Bryn Mawr activities: May Day, hockey, and a large number of play photographs, both professional and nonprofessional. Additionally, there are many notes from friends and many humorous drawings and comics illustrating life at Bryn Mawr. Among these comics are: one titled “Is This True” with Bryn Mawr labeled as “Spinster’s Home”; one comparing “Freshman Rush in the good old days” “Freshman Rush in 1903”; and one titled “Our Beautiful Bryn Mawr Spring,” featuring lots of rain.
This scrapbook contains a good example of many types of memorabilia, both the usual calling cards and play programs and some truly exceptional material, as well. The high volume of photographs and comics in this scrapbook make it a valuable and unique scrapbook for anyone interested in perusing Bryn Mawr’s early history through physical memorabilia.

Biographical / Historical
Genevieve Thompson Smith was born December 2, 1885 in Portland, Oregon. She was prepared for college by the Portland Academy in Portland and Mrs. Hartman’s School in New York. She attended Bryn Mawr College from 1903-1905 and the University of Oregon Law School from 1911-1913. She moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked in the Russian section of U.S. Army intelligence during World War I. In 1921, she married Admiral Norman Murray Smith. Thompson died in Portland, Oregon on May 20, 1974.

Custodial History
The collection was donated to the Archives by Margi Clarke (BMC 1984) in October of 2006. Margi Clarke received the collection from a relative of a Bryn Mawr student.
