Scope and Contents
Margaret Roberts Eastburn (1880-1964) was a Quaker elementary school teacher and principal. The collection contains primarily correspondence relating to Eastburn's career as an educator in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and especially her activities (1905-1921) as teacher and principal at Aimwell school, Philadelphia, Pa., a Quaker school for poor girls. Also included are biographical and genealogical materials, and business, financial, and legal papers of the Eastburn family of Bucks County, Pa.

Biographical / Historical
Margaret Roberts Eastburn, born 8mo 21, 1890, was the daughter of Channing Eastburn and Ellen Buckman Eastburn. She attended the Montgomery Terrace School at 1829 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was graduated in 1899 from Friends' Select School, Philadelphia. She then enrolled at the New Jersey State Normal School at Trenton, N.J., where she received her diploma in 1903 and her permanent life teaching certificate in 1906. She started her teaching career in the public schools of Princeton, N.J., where she taught for two years, leaving in 1905. In order to be near her parents, she took a position as teacher, and later principal, of the Aimwell School on N. Randolph St., in Philadelphia, a Quaker school for poor girls. In 1921, due to poor health, she was forced to take a rest from her teaching, but in 1922 she joined the teaching staff of the public schools in Ventnor, N.J., where she remained until her retirement from teaching in January 1951. Judging from letters sent to her by pupils and parents when she left each of her teaching positions, she was an excellent and greatly beloved teacher. Margaret R. Eastburn died on August 4, 1964.
